In May 1993, three persons getting dialysis from a specific clinic in Columbia were found to be HIV-positive. Responding to this information, Columbia’s National Institute of Health with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention investigated by earlier and later blood samples from patients attending the facility. This investigation found 9 persons attending the dialysis center got HIV during 1992-93, very likely from unsterile procedures.[1]
